The start of 2017 marks a significant milestone for Xeno Media: Operating as an incorporated business for 20 years.

Xeno Media was founded by Mike and Karen Acklin in an apartment in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood. The Acklins invited Kevin Munday to join Xeno Media as a third principal soon after.

Beginning with little business and few contacts, the trio worked hard to sell, design and produce small web projects to get things rolling. In 1999, Xeno Media had two significant breakthrough projects: an interactive site for Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, and a full web redesign for Fermilab. These began a period of growth within the scientific and educational communities that led to relationships and engagements around the world.

Similarly important to Xeno Media’s history, Mike Acklin led the development of XenoCMS—a PHP-based content management system adopted by many organizations and still in use today.

About 10 years ago, Xeno Media began to strategically focus on Open Source development around the Drupal and WordPress frameworks. This led to further strategic engagements—such as those with Allstate Corporation, The Civic Federation, the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, JLM Couture, Zoomdata and many others. Xeno Media staff are dedicated to the Open Source community and regularly commit time, expertise and code to these collaborations.

“Open Source is key to Xeno Media’s business growth. We invest in these projects so that we all can benefit,” said Mike Acklin, Xeno Media Co-founder and Principal.

Most importantly, Xeno Media has employed many fantastic employees and its dedication to fair compensation, good benefits, work/life balance and diversity has made a difference in many lives.

“More than anything else, we’ve built a company with colleagues we are proud of. We take care of each other and our families and benefit from the richness of our diversity,” said Kevin Munday, Xeno Media Principal.

20th Anniversary plans and activities include:

Xeno Causes

Each month, Xeno Media will make a donation to a non-profit organization chosen by an active employee and help publicize that charity in its company blog.

Anniversary Party

Current and former staff and their families will join together this summer to celebrate this milestone and look to the future.

“Starting a company from scratch is a challenge. We are fortunate to have survived and thrived in a rapidly-changing space. Our consistent growth is testament to our dedicated, expert staff and our loyal customers. We are excited for our future together,” said Karen Acklin, Xeno Media Co-founder and Principal.
